About Labradoodles

Introducing the delightful Australian Labradoodle! This affectionate and clever hybrid was created in Australia in the late 1980s by crossing Labradors and Poodles—with later inclusion of Cocker Spaniel—to craft a low-shedding, family-friendly service dog.

Labradoodles are full of playful energy and strong bonds with their families, thriving in homes with both affection and activity. Their coats—fleece, wool, or hair—vary widely in texture and colour, and are typically low-shedding but require regular grooming to prevent tangles.

These dogs excel in roles like therapy, service, agility, and obedience thanks to their intelligence and eagerness to please. With a moderate to high energy level, Labradoodles need daily walks, play, and mental stimulation to stay content and well-behaved. If you’re after a loyal, adaptable, and cuddle-loving companion with a hypoallergenic coat, the Australian Labradoodle could be the perfect pet for you!

🐶 FUN FACT! No two Labradoodles have the same coat—some are curly, others wavy, and a few even rock a shaggy surfer look.

Things you should know about Labradoodles

Dog Insurance

  • The average lifespan of a Labradoodle is 12 to 15 years, which gives you plenty of time to form a strong bond with your pup!
  • Available in miniature, medium, and standard sizes due to their Poodle lineage, Labradoodles may face different health risks based on their size—insurance helps provide tailored protection regardless of their build.
  • Their low-shedding curly or wavy coats require consistent grooming, which, while not covered by insurance, helps prevent skin issues like hot spots or infections that may require veterinary care.
  • In 2023-2024, the average benefits paid by Knose for Labradoodles were $266.

Pet Ownership

  • Known for their “hypoallergenic” coat, they are originally bred as guide dogs for people with allergies.
  • Despite their large size, Labradoodles tend to get along well with other dogs and cats due to their loving nature.
  • Labradoodles are good alert dogs, but they may not be great for small spaces and apartments as they tend to bark a lot.
  • An ideal home for a Labradoodle is one with plenty of open space to run and play and experienced dog owners with the time and energy to train, exercise, and socialize their pup.

Common health problems in Labradoodles

Knose covers the following potential health problems in Labraoodles:

Typically up to $15,000 per leg
Labradoodles, especially larger ones, can be prone to hip dysplasia—a condition where the hip joint doesn’t develop properly, causing it to loosen and wear down over time. It can be hereditary but may also be influenced by rapid growth, excessive weight, or high-impact exercise in puppies.

  • Knose: Annual excess

Other providersExcess paid per condition

Typically up to $10,000 per leg
Cruciate ligament rupture is a frequent orthopaedic issue in Labradoodles due to their active nature and solid build. The condition affects the knee joint, causing pain, limping, and reduced mobility. Labs are particularly prone to this injury from activities involving sudden turns or high-impact movements.

  • Knose: Annual excess

Other providersExcess paid per condition

Typically up to $10,000 per leg
Labradoodles can inherit a predisposition to elbow dysplasia, a developmental condition affecting the elbow joint. It leads to joint instability, pain, and arthritis, often seen as front limb lameness or stiffness. Management may include weight control, anti-inflammatory medication, or surgery in more advanced cases.

  • Knose: Annual excess

Other providersExcess paid per condition

Typically up to $1,500 per treatment
Due to their floppy, often hairy ears, Labradoodles are especially prone to ear infections. Moisture and poor air circulation create an ideal environment for bacteria and yeast. Common signs include head shaking, scratching, odour, and discharge. Regular ear cleaning and drying after water activities can help prevent infections.

10/10 personalised service!

In January, we brought a puppy (Bella) into our lives – she is beautiful! Recently she had a few gastro issues and subsequent vet visits. Knose Pet Insurance has been awesome. They acknowledged the claims immediately, and then followed up with personal emails advising us of the progress of our claims. We even received a message asking after Bella and a follow up to say how pleased they were that Bella is now doing well. Top class personalized service and a thorough explanation of the claim refunds. 10/10 guys!

Quick refund process

Submitted a claim for the first time after 12 months of insurance and everything went smoothly. I received regular updates of the progress of my claim and the refund process was quick once the team had received all the information from the vet.

Knose has been a great choice for pet insurance. The premiums are relatively affordable, claims are super easy to make by just uploading vet invoices, and the 24 hour phoneline that connects you with a vet nurse is a brilliant feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

In general, dog insurance is worth it because of the financial and emotional benefits of ensured care for your furry friends. It is valuable for Labradoodles due to their risk of genetic joint issues, allergies, and dental disease, which can lead to substantial and ongoing vet expenses.

Routine veterinary visits are recommended at least once a year, or more frequently if your dog has any health concerns.

Labradoodles require standard canine vaccinations: C3 (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus), plus kennel cough (parainfluenza and Bordetella), with regular boosters as recommended by your vet.

Labradoodles don’t have breed-specific dietary needs, but they benefit from a high-quality, balanced diet that supports joint and coat health, especially since they may inherit sensitivities or allergies from their Poodle lineage.

Choose a policy that covers hip dysplasia and patella luxation, which Labradoodles are genetically predisposed to—both are “Specified Conditions” under Knose with a 6-month exclusion period. Adding optional extras like dental illness and behavioural cover early is also recommended.

When purchasing a new dog insurance policy for your dog:

  • The minimum age for entry for a pet is 6 weeks old.
  • The maximum age for entry for a pet is 8 years and 364 days old.
  • The maximum age for including or adding optional extra benefits is 2 years and 364 days.

There are no age limits when renewing policies.
