About Moodles

The Moodle is a popular designer dog breed created by crossing a Maltese with a Poodle. First developed in Australia during the 1990s, the breed was bred to combine the intelligence of the Poodle with the affectionate nature of the Maltese.

Moodles are particularly well suited to households with children, older people, and first-time dog owners due to their friendly and adaptable nature. Some Moodles are even used as therapy and emotional support dogs because of their gentle and people-focused personalities.

Today, they remain one of Australia’s most popular companion breeds.

Living with Moodle Dogs

Being a Moodle pet owner can be very rewarding. Here’s a quick look at their needs.

Temperament & Social Needs

  • Moodles are affectionate companion dogs that form strong bonds with their families and enjoy being involved in daily activities.
  • Because they become deeply attached to their owners, Moodles can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods.

Exercise & Grooming

  • Moodles have a decent amount of energy and need daily exercise, such as brisk walks or indoor playtime, to stay healthy.
  • Their low-shedding, hypoallergenic fur tangles easily. Daily brushing and professional grooming is recommended every 4 to 6 weeks to prevent matting.

Health Insights

  • As a crossbreed, Moodles may inherit health conditions including patellar luxation (loose kneecaps) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), an inherited eye disease that can affect vision.
  • Like many small dog breeds, Moodles are also prone to dental disease. Regular tooth brushing, dental chews, and routine veterinary dental check-ups can help maintain good oral health.

Common health problems in Moodles

Knose covers the following potential health problems in Moodle dogs:

Typically up to $1,500 per treatment
Because Moodles have floppy, hairy ears that trap moisture, they create the perfect dark environment for bacterial and yeast overgrowth.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $2,000 per episode
Moodles may inherit sensitive digestive systems from their parent breeds, which can make them more prone to occasional stomach upsets and stress-related digestive changes.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $5,000 per treatment
This inflammatory condition causes full-body tremors and is heavily linked to small, white-coated breeds like the Maltese, a direct ancestor of the Moodle.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $5,000 per year
The small mouths of Moodles lead to crowded teeth, which traps food and rapidly accelerates plaque buildup, tartar, and painful gum infections.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $5,000 per leg
As a small breed, Moodles may be prone to patellar luxation, a condition where the kneecap slips out of its normal position. Depending on the severity, treatment may range from joint support supplements to corrective surgery.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $2,000 per episode
Moodles can have highly sensitive immune systems that trigger severe, life-threatening allergic reactions to insect stings, certain foods, or routine vaccinations.

  • Covered by Knose

Typically up to $6,000 per treatment
Due to their naturally curious, playful personalities, Moodles are notorious for chewing on and accidentally swallowing small household objects or toy stuffing.

Frequently Asked Questions

In general, pet insurance is worth it because of the financial support it provides. For Moodles, it’s especially helpful in managing veterinary costs related to inherited conditions and injuries they may develop over their long lives.

Routine veterinary visits are recommended at least once a year, or more frequently if your dog has any health concerns.

Standard vaccinations include distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and leptospirosis. Your vet can provide a tailored vaccination schedule.

Moodles do best on a high-quality, small-breed diet that matches their fast metabolism and supports sensitive digestion. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important to reduce strain on their joints. Consult with your vet for the best options for your dog.

Look for flexible pet insurance coverage that includes routine care, accidents, illness, and hereditary conditions. At Knose, your pet benefits from all these and more at a lower cost! It’s also helpful to have a high annual limit and benefit percentage to manage potential ongoing treatment costs.

When purchasing a new dog insurance policy for your dog:

  • The minimum age for entry for a pet is 6 weeks old.
  • The maximum age for entry for a pet is 8 years and 364 days old.
  • The maximum age for including or adding optional benefits is 2 years and 364 days.

There are no age limits when renewing policies.
