Living with Whippet Dogs
Being a Whippet pet owner can be very rewarding. Here’s a quick look at their needs.
Temperament & Social Needs
- While they love a good sprint, Whippets are incredibly calm, quiet, and lazy indoors. They will happily spend most of their day curled up on the softest cushion or blanket they can find.
- They are generally not aggressive towards other dogs or people and live well with other breeds. They may bark to alert visitors, usually out of excitement rather than hostility.
Exercise & Grooming
- With a short, sleek coat, Whippets need minimal grooming. Regular nail clipping, teeth cleaning, and the occasional bath are usually enough.
- The main care consideration is keeping them warm. Whippets are thin-skinned with little body fat and feel the cold easily. A well-fitted coat is recommended in cooler months, ideally shaped with a curved back for comfort.
Health Insights
- Because they have very thin skin and little body fat, Whippets are prone to scrapes, tears, and feeling chilly.
- Whippets are generally healthy and long-lived, but responsible breeding screens for genetic conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), heart murmurs, and congenital deafness.
